What If?

I did this alternate reality version of Marilyn Monroe for the upcoming “WHAT IF?” show at Nucleus Art Gallery down in CA next weekend. If you're in the area, definitely go check it out. There's a ton of great artists participating so it's sure to be an amazing exhibition.

Nucleus has invited animators from various studios to tackle the question, “What If...?” These clever and small-sized works come from a roster of more than 40 talents working at studios such as Disney, DreamWorks, Pixar, Cartoon Network, Sony, LAIKA, and Blue Sky. What if the moon were made of cheese? What if money really did grow on trees? What if it actually rained cats and dogs? What if you and your friends came to this event? You’d likely all have a really fun time!

Once in a while I design merchandise for the rock band Weezer. They recently called on me to design a 'future retro' style poster, and here's what I came up with. I think you can buy it at their shows and here at their store. Originally there was a girl standing behind him but we decided it was too crowded. Maybe I'll post that alternate version later.

Hey cool news. My Conan O'Brien 'Van Coco' painting earned a spot on the wall at the 'New York Museum of Conan Art' while Conan O'Brien takes his show on the road to the Big Apple. Check it out here and if you're in NY, stop by the museum and get a picture of my painting for me. Seriously, please get me a good pic of it and email it to me as I can't make it to New York!

Taking a little break from posting my own stuff to bring you this AWESOMENESS. Last night I was picking up some snacks for today's big game and stumbled upon this new retro-tastic Frosted Flakes box. If you've been following my blog for a year or two you'll know I'm a huge fan of the vintage boxes and have designed a few of my own -- partly for fun and partly to try and push the big three cereal companies to bring back the cereal mascots of old. I'm not going to take any shred of credit for this but I sure am glad somebody at Kellog's is finally doing the right thing by bringing this version of Tony the Tiger back, even if it is just for a limited time. Hopefully Kellog's will follow with more (hinted on the back of the box?), and the other big brands will catch on. Thank you Kellog's! Let me know if you want any new mascots designed ;)

Since November I've been the Art Director for Hasbro's upcoming 'My Little Pony' reboot, and they've finally released some designs from the series (left). The show looks amazing thanks to Powerpuff Girls/Foster's Home/Milky Way & the Galaxy Girls all-star Lauren Faust, who is one of the series' producers and head creative. It's been amazing working with Lauren and working on this show.

It really has been a loooooong time. A lot has happened since I last posted here. Started a new gig as Art director on the My Little Pony series reboot (headed up by the amazing Lauren Faust!), released a couple of records, and moved most of my artwork over to deviantArt.com. They have a real slick artist friendly site so I got on the bandwagon. Tons of amazing talent and inspiration over there too. Check it out!
I'll definitely keep the beehive going though for those of you that are checking in. I see I have a lot of cleaning up to do - looks like a ton of my stuff is missing or has broken links! Got my Yeti in the mail yesterday. So rad. I can't believe how accurate and on model this sculpt and paint is. If you're a collector of these kinda things, try to find one. The pictures don't so it justice. Check out the previous Yeti posts for the progress of this bad boy.

Now this was cool. A while back Gama-Go asked me to help design a vinyl version of Tim Biskup's staple Gama-Go Yeti character. Being as that's one of my favorite characters EVER, it wasn't the kind of offer to say no to. So I enthusiastically sketched up this here turnaround and off he went into production. I've seen the finished prototype and let me tell you, it's stinkin' AMAZING... and BIG too! You can read more about the vinyl Yeti's development at Vinyl Pulse.

Here's my submission for the FOURTY show next Friday. Because I'm a crappy painter, I decided to cheat and go digital. I came up with a label idea, drew a couple character sketches (top left), and did the whole thing up in Flash (top right).

Then, I printed my label on some sticky photo paper and slapped it down on a big bottle of Olde English "800". It looked pretty swell, but something was missing! My lovely wife with her keen eye suggested a mini 60s style lampshade. Because I'm a bit of a moron I scoffed and thought 'ha! I don't think soooo'. Then she described what she meant and I was sold. We bought the materials, she made the shade and voila! a retro stylin' malt liquor lamp fit for Mr. Drunkard's late night binges!
